With the scarcity of land, increased costs for living, overpopulation and accumulation of household waste, the design seeks to learn from nature to create a space-efficient and self-sustaining home, utilising anaerobic digestion tanks to transform domestic bio-waste into valuable energy, whilst ‘cleansing the city’ through innovative air filtration. In nature there is no concept of waste. Everything is effectively food for another organism or system. This is something we can learn from.

The solution can work as a standalone home or collectively, where the stacked scenario for Arthropod living cells, may harness community waste to fuel a 1-in-10 additional home with a net zero carbon footprint.
The Arthropod Home as an individual micro dwelling aims to be an exemplar for a standalone off-grid living. The adaptability and flexibility of this micro-living design allows it to be adaptive to multiple sites and locations in several site-specific configurations; - on the fringes, within the suburban peripheries, stacked into urban infill sites or even cell-like towers in the heart of our cities. Where the exoskeleton structure enables efficient stacking, resulting in material efficiency and sustainable smart density to permit a more vertical version of the arthropod eco-system, with multiple stacked micro-dwellings.

The design of the internal modular layout embodies the needs of the modern citizen which now includes working from home. This is achieved through a programmed central pivoting wall, which enables an array of configurations for living spaces, carefully blending both quiet and communal spaces and live, work and entertain spaces. A unique pivoting wall hugs a sweeping curved feature window, creating a volume that maximises light and space within, feeling airy and volumetric. The roof forms an integral part of the aesthetic and the function of the waste cycle, equipped with edible plants, water collection/ filtration systems, solar panels and digestion tanks, where the compost from the garden combined with household waste is collected and transformed.
