Heta Architects were involved in design of a luxury wellness hotel and island resort on Jeju Island. The brief called for full renovation and extension to the existing hotel to create a new 5 star hotel and resort incorporating a blend of luxury, leisure, retail and cultural experiences. The initial research by Heta examined Korean wellness trends to inform a concept deeply rooted in place and forming a differential factor from neighbouring hotels.

Respecting natural surroundings by integrating into existing topography

The hotel’s unique character is epitomised by the iconic octagonal building which is very visible from within the resort and beyond. The distinctive character of the hotel surroundings is derived from the green terraces which step down to the south and forms a landscape from which to view the ocean. The selection of location for the new extension is to be done carefully and sensitively in order not to compromise the primary assets of the hotel; the lower lawn the terraces and the 360 degree views.

The design of the spa & wellness area blends the interior and exterior into one seamless sensorial experience. The exterior space focuses on capturing and framing the beauty of the surrounding lush landscape.

Located on the southern edge of Jeju Island, the design of the extension embraces the breath-taking views of the ocean and forest. The architecture and interior concept are inspired by the rich cultural and environmental beauty of the volcanic island, the local Tamna culture and the historically significant hotel.
